Non-Verbal Learning Disability (NVLD)
A Non-verbal learning disability is suspected whenever this is a significant difference between someone’s higher verbal reasoning abilities and their lower non-verbal reasoning. NVLDs involve problems in ‘reading’ and using non-verbal cues such as facial expressions, tone of voice, volume of speech, rate of speech, inflection, hand gestures, and the use of physical space / physical closeness. It can also involve problems with sense of direction and time management. We have a specialized treatment protocol that involves the use of videotaping. We have found that NVLD individuals learn more about their non-verbal behaviors by literally watching themselves as others see them.
