Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
PTSD can develop in response to a single major trauma (such as sexual assault, a major car accident, being in a natural disaster, war, act of terrorism) or in response to exposure to several so-called smaller traumas (chronic emotional or physical abuse). The symptoms of PTSD can include flashbacks in response to ‘triggers’ or things that remind one of the trauma. Flashbacks create the impression of being back in the traumatic situation again. There can also be nightmares, repeated, intrusive memories of the trauma, and a range of other symptoms such as depression, anxiety, panic, feeling like one is ‘falling apart,” obsessions about the trauma, etc. A specific treatment technique known as EMDR can be very effective for dealing with PTSD.
